My dad is a freelance trumpet player who toured for a couple decades, is now based in Los Angeles, and spent a chunk of my formative years on the road with Phil Collins. I had the great fortune of growing up in that world and with most of my family located in Texas and Wisconsin, musicians were the family I knew. So when it came time to put together the jigsaw puzzle of this show, I knew exactly how I wanted it to start and I knew exactly how I wanted it to end.
Before the downbeat of every Phil Collins show, there's a song that would play that signaled to the musicians, crew, artist, family members...that it was time.... This song, Souareba by Salif Keita, brings back memories like no other song can...and is forever ingrained in the fabric of my soul.
And of course I had to end AFTER ALL with The Mary Tyler Moore Show theme song, right? One would think. But I was actually in love with the outro to the show! There's a beautiful trumpet solo I really wanted my dad to play. And so I asked him if he would.
And because my dad's the best, he delivered the outro as promised, along with a special surprise. That iconic theme song, performed by some of LA's top musicians, mixed by multi-Emmy and Grammy award winner Tommy Vicari (mixer for the Academy Awards), and sung by 3 of the most important voices in my life: Amy Keys, Lamont Van Hook....and my dad. I'm still in shock and can think of no better memento for this entire experience. So glad I didn't think of it first.
